AIDA Entertainment House

The Project:
In the heart of St. Pauli, Hamburg, a new seven-story building with a striking red façade towers above the city’s trendy club district: AIDA Entertainment House, the creative headquarters of AIDA Cruises. Located in this 4,360 m² space are the cruise line’s costume design, tailoring, production and operation departments, as well as their extensive collection of props. In addition, four large rehearsal rooms, a performers’ stage, a pre-programming room, sound studios, plus recording studio make it possible for those responsible for sound design and entertainment, event technicians, artists, dancers, singers, and musicians to prepare meticulously for their performances on board. The Entertainment House is conceived as a training platform that simulates the conditions on the ships’ stages. It allows AIDA Entertainment to develop new entertainment formats and perfect existing shows.

The Challenge:
ASC’s task was to outfit all Entertainment House rooms that serve to prepare and produce show formats with state-of-the-art, sustainable media technology. Based on the technical conditions found on board, ASC was thus able to recreate practically the identical situation on the ships for training purposes. This was done in a forward-thinking way so that contemporary, innovative technologies can be exchanged or supplemented as needed in an uncomplicated manner.

The Solution:
Together with audio pro and consultant Malte Polli-Holstein, ASC installed professional media technology for sound, lighting, communication, and control systems in a way that resembles the situation on board the cruise ships as much as possible. Malte Polli-Holstein is owner and manager of Three-in-One Entertainment & Consulting in Hamburg and is responsible for show production at AIDA Cruises as technical director and sound designer. AIDA Entertainment has been collaborating successfully with ASC for over 15 years and has continually developed further the quality standards for their stage concepts. “In carrying out these new tasks, we can really count on an experienced team,” commented Malte Polli-Holstein in reference to cooperating with the Hamburg system house. “ASC is surefooted when it comes to media-system equipment, be it on shore or on board.”

The media technology systems in the Entertainment House are conceived in such a way that they are very compact and space-saving, and are able to withstand 6 days a week of non-stop rehearsals without problems. Similar to the AIDA fleet’s onboard 3-story “Theatrium”, the Entertainment House also has a 10 m-high performers’ stage with a flying artist system. In this case, ASC installed loudspeakers on two levels. The sound concept for the performers’ stage and smaller rehearsal rooms consists of Meyer Sound components and an appropriate integrated speaker management system. A DiGiCo SD8 console is in charge of mixing in such a way that a broad spectrum of events can be handled.

The wireless technology is by Sennheiser and has a large switching bandwidth in order to accommodate requirements on board as far as flexible frequency management goes.

The lighting system, which consists of ControLite Excalibur dimmers by Amptown Manufaktur, ETC profile spotlights, and moving-head Elation spots, is controlled via an MA Lighting grandma ultra-light.

The pre-programming room features an 80” eyevis LCD screen so that technicians can immediately see what’s going on with stage as well as projection and lighting processes. The ASC rack houses a WYSIWG system by coolux. Together with the Pandoras Box media server, audio, video, and image files are available so that the digital model of the Theatrium can be simulated. 2014 will see the first test run of this complex media-technology system, as the rehearsals for the new flag ship AIDAprima, currently under construction in the Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan, are underway.
