Hamburg Forest Center (Wälderhaus Hamburg)

Multifunctional building with exhibition, hotel, and restaurant

The Project: The Wälderhaus Hamburg, or Hamburg Forest Center, is an architectural and ecological flagship project that forms part of the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg in the city’s Wilhelmsburg district. The striking building, made of reinforced concrete and solid spruce wood, was a distinctive feature at the main entrance of the International Garden Show igs 2013. Owner and operator of the Forest Center is the Hamburg chapter of the German Forest Conservation Society (“Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald”). The Forest Center serves as the Society’s base where it can showcase its educational program on environmental issues with the “Forest Science Center” and the “Forest Forum”. The Forest Center houses four main facilities under one roof: the “Forest Science Center”, a permanent hands-on exhibition focusing on forests; the “Forest Forum” with a multifunctional room for conferences and events plus three seminar rooms and space for special exhibits. In addition, the five-storey edifice is home to the “Wilhelms im Wälderhaus” restaurant, with the “Raphael Hotel Wälderhaus” occupying the upper three floors.

The Challenge: Amptown System Company previously had cooperated closely with Studio Andreas Heller in co-designing media technology for spectacular cultural projects such as the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven. The real challenge in such cases lies in turning the architects’ creative vision into reality. Every project is unique -- there aren’t any ready-made solutions. In-depth dialogue among those involved is necessary to ascertain what effect the exhibit is meant to have on the visitor. Is s/he allowed only to look, or should s/he actually touch it and try out various functions? What purpose should the exhibition space have? Is it for representative purposes only? Or should it be a conference room, auditorium, cinema, and event center as well? The task here was to make the exhibition a lively, illustrative, and hands-on experience with the help of media technology like audio stations and interactive displays.

The Solution: ASC delved deeply into the subject matter, examining topics such as wolves, birdcalls, forest scenes, and insects (e.g., woodworms), and then came up with technical solutions that allow the visitor to see, hear, or even touch each exhibit. When it comes to objects that get a lot of use, such as microphones, headsets, handsets, or multimedia pillars with push-buttons, it is important to ensure a high degree of durability. Many visitors, including lots of children, attend the exhibition every day, so the exhibits are subject to a great deal of wear-and-tear. For this reason, ASC designed handsets for audio stations that are very hard-wearing while simultaneously having a sophisticated, high-quality look. Visitors using such a handset can, for example, hear what the aforementioned woodworms inside a section of a tree sound like. The conference and seminar rooms were equipped in a classical manner with beamers, screens, loudspeakers, and microphone set. All these components are networked to a mobile lectern that can be used at various places in the room, thanks to the wiring point floor boxes.
