Komische Oper Berlin (Comic Opera Berlin)

The digital communication system

With new stage management system, central technology, modern infrastructure, and digital intercom

The Project: The Komische Oper Berlin is known for its contemporary, vibrant, and accessible musical theater; it is the smallest of the three Berlin operas (the other two being the Deutsche Oper and the State Opera Unter den Linden). Together with the State Ballet and the Stage Services Company, the Komische Oper Berlin belongs to the Berlin Opera Foundation, which coordinates the centralized financial accounting and human resources services for all companies. Like the other opera venues and the ballet, the Komische Oper is an autonomous institution with its own independent artistic director and budget. The building that houses the Komische Oper in Berlin’s central district on Behrensstrasse was known originally as “Theater Unter den Linden” and later as “Metropol Theater”. It reopened following the Second World War and underwent reconstruction during the mid-1960s to take on its present-day form.

The Challenge: In the summer of 2013, the Senate Administration for Urban Development and the Environment set the wheels in motion for a technical refurbishment of the Komische Oper. The Berlin-based engineering firm Chemnitius was tasked with the technical planning and assessment of demand. Following a public call for bids, Amptown System Company was awarded the contract. During the 2013 summer break at the opera, the teams from Berlin and Hamburg, under Ingo Jakobs’s leadership, carried out the partial renewal of the stage management system, the modernization and expansion of the infrastructure and central technology, as well as the configuration and installation of a new intercom system. Moreover, the video remote transmission system required 6 additional positions in the theater: two for total views 1 and 2, two in the orchestra pit, and one each left and right along the side boxes. The upgrade also includes the ability to video record, manage the recordings within the IP network, as well as live streaming at selected PC workstations in the theater.

The Solution: Today’s Komische Oper Berlin enjoys a completely digital communication system which will allow it to remain on the cutting edge of technology for a long time to come. ASC fitted out the racks for central technology in its in-house workshop prior to installation. They carefully documented the existing system in order to ensure a perfect fit with the modernized facilities. New cable runs were added to complement the existing 100V loudspeakers and their cabling, e.g., fiber optic cables to integrate the new BroaMan media network, CAT5 cables to control the HD and SD video cameras as well as their pan-tilt heads and last, but not least, wiring for the new intercom system. Two new and separate InspiControl® stage management desks were installed in the Komische Oper Berlin; these are positioned to the right and left of the stage and can be operated simultaneously. The stage management facilities feature a modern modular and scalable design. During more elaborate productions, the smaller of the two desks provides support for the main stage manager at the larger desk. The layout and functionality of all keypads were preprogrammed according to the specifications of the Komische Oper Berlin and are controlled via an integrated Ethernet interface using a Crestron media control system. A fiber optics network handles the exchange of data. ASC installed a real time media network from BroaMan that enables the virtually latency-free signal transport of uncompressed HD SDI video, audio, Ethernet, and intercom signals. Each input signal can be sent to one or more outputs via integrated, software-based signal routing within the network. The stage management desks are integrated into this network through fiber optics, giving the stage manager at his/her desk full access to all media signals in the network.
