Senate Administration for Urban Development and the Environment

The Project
The Senate Administration for Urban Development and the Environment in Berlin is the central regional authority in charge of the future development of the city. It is divided into various departments such as urban planning, building and housing, traffic, environmental and climate protection, as well as preservation of historical monuments/buildings. At the head of the organization is the senator for urban development and the environment, together with his secretaries of state and the city’s building director.

The Conference Room
The historically protected office building in Württembergischen Straße 6 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf is managed by BIM (Berlin Property Management GmbH). A conference room in ‘50s style is located on the second floor and was brought up to date as far as media technology goes, while still preserving its historical significance. The Berlin engineers Müller GmbH were in charge of the media-systems technical planning.

The Challenge
Following a public call for bids, BIM put ASC in charge of audio, video, and media-technology controls. The historical wood paneling of the conference room, which hides the presentation media, including a screen, a control smartboard, a display, a technology rack, as well as a sound system, presented a major challenge here. Keeping in line with the precepts of historical preservation, the paneling had to be maintained. Before presentations begin, the individual elements of the panels can be opened in a sequence of approx. 3.5 minutes. The system itself is ready to operate in one minute.

The Solution
ASC’s system specialists created a new media-control infrastructure and, as per the historic preservation brief, integrated the components in such a way that they are more or less concealed. At the head of the conference room, a large screen was installed that is framed by two Meyer Sound CAL Array 32 steerable columns. These are installed “invisibly” in two ducts and covered by black acoustic fabrics. Installed on the side is a smartboard with an interactive 55” display which allows for manual control commands. The 4K ultra-high-definition resolution guarantees optimal image sharpness. Thanks to the intuitive user interface tools, the presenter can switch from using the mouse or writing with digital ink. Everything can be deleted with the palm of the hand or the virtual eraser, all of which happens automatically without having to manually alter the tool.

Moreover, a Crestron Pro 2 media control system and a 6” Crestron radio-controlled touch panel enable wireless control commands, for instance to select image and sound sources. For PC presentations, the Barco RLM-W12 projector, strategically positioned across from the conference seating, can be started. It is located on a higher level behind the conference room behind an electrical flap made of cinema glass. As soon as the desired contents appear, sound comes on at the pre-selected volume. External notebooks, tablets, PCs, or smart phones are detected by intelligent connector panels.

ASC installed a high-quality conference system from the company DIS, Danish Interpretation System, which is a perfect fit with the conference room’s architecture; it features excellent sound quality and fully digitalized audio transmission. ASC custom-designed floor boxes for this system.

For presentations and conferences, there is a professional wireless microphone system from Shure’s ULX-D series. ULXD1 body-pack transmitters, ULXD2 hand-held transmitters, and additional equipment ensure that the transmission links function flawlessly. As an alternative, there are also clip-on lapel microphones and ear sets available.

In addition to the digital 8-channel automatic mixer from Shure, the SMC 820 with Dante interface, a QSYS system for routing the audio channels is integrated into the technology rack that is linked to the media controls.
