Shakespeare Company Bremen

New media technology, new stage lighting, and modernization of audio system

The Project: The bremer shakespeare company is a self-run theater collective that, in addition to numerous pieces by Shakespeare, also puts on its own productions and co-productions with national and international theater groups. In existence since 1983, the company has been performing since 1988 in an old school auditorium located in Bremen’s Neustadt district. Over the years, the ensemble had been improvising not just onstage, but in regard to the technology and space available to it as well. Its outdated fire safety measures also required an urgent upgrade to conform to the latest technical standards. In addition to modernizing the stage area, the foyer, performers’ dressing rooms, workshop, sanitary facilities, and storage area underwent complete renovation as well.

The Challenge: As part of a modernization project, Bremen’s Senate for Culture and its public real estate management company Immobilien Bremen devised a plan for new stage equipment, media technology, and stage lighting, as well as an upgrade of existing audio technology with a new signal distribution system and new infrastructure for the bremer shakespeare company. Stage planner Manfred Westfehling of WME Planning Office in Seligenstadt was put in charge of technical planning. Following a public call for bids, Amptown System Company was awarded the job of systems integration under Markus Joseph as project leader. Modernization measures included enlarging the entire stage area while simultaneously bringing it to the same level. Additional mobile platforms allow the stage surface to vary in width and depth; a redesigned stage tower can extend the height to 8.5 meters. A gallery was built to surround the stage; in addition, accessible lighting bridges and a portal bridge that can be moved manually over the entire depth of the stage were installed. ASC also installed numerous junction boxes in the stage tower, on the gallery, portal bridge, and stage as well as backstage and in the auditorium. The facilities are now in compliance with modern safety standards.

The Solution: Today’s bremer shakespeare company enjoys easy-to-operate, professional theater technology; all connections in the venue are clearly organized. ASC mounted 50 combined junction boxes throughout the entire theater for stage lighting, audio, video, and network technology and installed a new dimmer system. For existing sound equipment, signal distribution within the system was designed in a new, efficient manner. All signals in the theater -- be they DMX, network, audio, or video signals -- may be assigned freely via corresponding patch boards. To complement the existing lighting inventory, new high-quality stage lights were purchased which provide the theater with a variety of illumination options. Lighting technicians can now choose from a wide range of spotlights, thus setting the stage for successful dramaturgy no matter what’s playing.
