The Room “Bar+Club” in Hamburg’s Radisson Blu

The Project:
The 4-star hotel Radisson Blu in Hamburg belongs to the hotel chain Radisson Blu, known for its luxurious design, excellent comfort, and urban convenience. It is located adjacent to the city’s stunning botanical garden Planten un Blomen. Soaring over the city skyline at a height of 108 meters, it is the tallest hotel in Hamburg and until the Elbphilharmonie was built, it was the tallest building in the city. Radisson Blu Hamburg has a total of 32 floors, 27 of which are occupied by 556 hotel rooms.

The cellar of the hotel is home to “The Room” Bar+Club. This striking lounge-bar impresses guests with its stylish interior design; shortly after the opening, it was elected to the “Finest Clubs of the World”. The club with its lounge-bar is open 365 days a year from 6 pm and offers tasteful drinks, cocktails, and snacks as well as an unmistakable atmosphere. Club events take place Fridays and Saturdays. In addition to the dance floor with its large LED wall, “The Room” has a spacious, comfy lounge with fireplace and a VIP area. The cool lounge-bar was designed by Hamburg designer Frank Theuerkauf, renowned for his interior design and gastronomy concepts, and puts event gastronomy in a new light.

The Challenge:
The objective in designing “The Room” Bar+Club was to develop a contemporary crowd-puller and gastronomic hot spot. ASC’s task consisted of providing the appropriate setting for the spectacular interior design highlights created by Frank Theuerkauf. This entailed using new materials such as LUCEM light-transmitting concrete as well as employing creative lighting components. ASC was also tasked with installing a new sound system.

The Solution:
The outfitting of “The Room” is based on a world premiere: The nine-meter long bar counter and walls literally come to life thanks to LUCEM light-transmitting concrete with its individual LED controls. The LED single-pixel technology makes it possible to put on light shows that move in time to the music. A thousand filigree light-transmitting fibers embedded in the material transport the light from the back-mounted lighting to the surface. This allows the interior elements to light up from inside and shine outwardly.

Behind the light-transmitting concrete panels (120 cm x 60 cm, 15 mm thick), ASC installed LED strips with individually controlled LEDs at a distance of 15 cm. ASC programmed and controlled the pixels in the concrete and lighting in the club via MADRIX, an LED lighting and control system. Thanks to the distance from the concrete, the lighting effects are harmonious and soft and allow for various scenarios: From static colors, dynamic color sequences, to moving color schemes in time to the music -- everything is possible.

The luminous ceiling was equipped with an installation made of three-dimensional polygons. ASC illuminated these lighting fixtures with Futurelight spots. In between the polygons, there are little compact moving lights whose light refracts on the transparent struts of the polygons, thus giving the impression that the ceiling is in constant motion.

A fireplace lounge and numerous small corner seating areas complete the interior design of “The Room”, which also features an exquisite catering concept. The separate cigar lounge with a range of fine wines offers extraordinary delights of its own.

The dance floor is located directly next to a 7 x 3-meter LEDCON LED wide screen with 7 mm pixel pitch. The LED wall is also controlled via the MADRIX software and can play a wide variety of video content, from spectacular effects to video clips. To animate the guests, for instance, images of dancing bodies similar to those in the James Bond films’ intro scenes are depicted.

The high-performance sound system installed by ASC is very comprehensive and consists of loudspeaker components from the E- and S-series by d&b Audiotechnik. These are reinforced by d&b power amplifiers. The DJ set is composed of Pioneer and Technics players.
