Hotel Barceló in Hamburg

The Project:
The Barceló Group, headquartered in Palma de Mallorca (Spain), is one of that country’s leading travel companies and numbers among the most important worldwide. The company’s hotel and travel division operates over 140 hotels in 17 countries and more than 400 travel agencies in 22 countries. The group is owned by the Barceló family and has been run by family members for three generations.

The Barceló Hamburg is the second establishment of the hotel group located in Germany. The 4-star hotel, with its innovative and avant-garde design, offers business travelers and private guests visiting Hamburg a comfortable stay and excellent service: It boasts over 190 modern hotel rooms with Iberian flair, as well as the restaurant 1700, the B-Lounge with restaurant, wine bar, and courtyard patio, plus wellness and fitness facilities. The hotel is also fully equipped for meetings, with a total of 280 m² of space for events divided into 6 different function rooms.

The Challenge:
The Vinothek, the cozy wine bar in the B-Lounge of Barceló Hamburg, with its wooden tables and architectural accents, is reminiscent of a modern Spanish bodega and offers a carefully selected range of 1,700 wines. Responsible for the interior design of the hotel, completed in 2012, was Gabriel Santos Planning + Design, who combined contemporary Spanish influences with Hanseatic elements. The ceiling, which features cut-out floral patterns, is fitted with high-quality designer lamps. However, their functional and atmospheric light output was not entirely satisfactory. ASC was therefore tasked with optimizing the lighting in the bar and Vinothek while remaining true to the existing decor with its designer ceiling and lighting concept.

The Solution:
ASC installed 2 rows of Elation Flex Pixel LED Stripes behind the ceiling panels. The LED Pixel Stripe features 72 RGB SMD LEDs (3-in-1 LEDs) with a 40 mm pitch and 216 channels.

In consultation with the architect and the hotel management, a structured Plexiglas was selected and installed behind the cut-out floral patterns in the ceiling panels, thus providing pleasant lighting through refraction.

Control of the Stripes behind the individual panels occurs via a Flex Pixel Driver and allows for various lighting moods in red, green, or blue. This enables a color gradient over the entire ceiling.

For convenient operation, ASC installed a user-friendly control module that allows the desired lighting moods to be retrieved via 6 buttons.

Thus ASC provided a tailored solution to the challenge of enhancing the existing architecture with efficient, atmospheric lighting.
