Braunschweig State Theater

The Project
The Staatstheater Braunschweig is a traditional theater that comprises the five genres of musical theater (opera, operetta, musicals), drama, dance, and the State Theater for Children and Young people, as well as the Braunschweig State Orchestra. In addition to the Grand Hall located on Steinweg with approximately 1000 seats, there are two other venues which belong to the city ensemble: the Lesser Hall with a multifunctional configuration and approx. 300 seats, as well as Hall Three with 80 seats. During the summer months, the Burgplatz Square functions as an additional open-air venue. Every year there are roughly 35 premieres that take place in the Staatstheater venues and another 10 symphony concerts are held in the city hall.

The Challenge
Following the introduction of LTE (Long Term Evolution; digital data transmission in digital radio networks) in Staatstheater Braunschweig, there were malfunctions in the analog wireless system which were in use up to that time. Taking into consideration the limited radio spectrum requested, the theater’s audio engineering team came up with a plan for wireless communication. A test carried out with the assistance of specialists from the company Shure demonstrated the advantages of digital signal transmission as opposed to analog transmission. Once this had been established, a public, Europe-wide tender for bids for the entire system was put together with the help of professional stage planner Walter Kottke Engineers.

The Solution
The specialists from Amptown System Company won out with their conceptual solution of digital signal management and the wireless microphone system Shure ULX-D. The new Shure ULX-D wireless mike system is compatible with the exacting demands of the various individual venues of Staatstheater Braunschweig. The system features a high (radio signal) range and optimum use of frequency spectrum. It is now possible to use all the theater’s 80HF signals in all three venues simultaneously. The system’s frequency bandwidth is flexible and will be usable for many years to come, making it a good investment for the future. Operational reliability was a decisive factor here; the Shure ULX-D components feature the following advantages: a 24-bit / 48 kHz audio signal without audible digital compression artifacts, high spectrum efficiency, long operational capacity thanks to the system batteries (10), and a low latency of just 2.9 milliseconds.

74 digital ULX-D1 pocket transmitters and 36 wireless ULX-D2 handheld transmitters are in operation in Staatstheater Braunschweig. KSM9 microphone capsules are attached to the ULX-D2 handheld transmitters. In addition, ASC delivered Shure Beta 58A microphone capsules for switching over to live singing, as well as 17 quad ULX-D4Q receivers, 4 ULX-D4D dual receivers, and 4 more ULX-D single receivers. The dual (ULX-D4D) and quad (ULX-D4Q) receivers also feature extras such as body pack frequency diversity for fail-safe signal transmission and, particularly important for this installation, the network protocol “Dante”.

In all, 1-, 2-, and 4-channel mike receivers were installed in Staatstheater Braunschweig. The 2- and 4-channel systems in operation in the Grand Hall and Lesser Hall have Dante interfaces, so that the signal management is now completely digital: The audio signals are digitally transferred to the receiver and transmitted via an audio network to the current mixing-console system which was also equipped with a Dante card. In Hall 3 and the peripheral rehearsal rooms, the connection to the mixing console is still analog. In the summer, system components from the Grand Hall and Lesser Hall will be removed temporarily and used for the open-air venue at Burgplatz Square. At the request of the theater’s sound department, ASC designed a mobile rack for this purpose.
